Understand New Work Requirements for Medicaid
Some adults ages 19–64 will have new work requirements for Medicaid coverage and may need to show that they are working, in school, in job training, or volunteering. This will be reviewed when you apply or renew your coverage.

You can do these things to meet the requirements:

  • Earn income of at least $580 per month
  • Complete at least 80 hours per month of any of the following activities, or a combination of them:
    • Work in a job
    • Go to school at least half time
    • Join a job training or work program
    • Volunteer or help out in your community
  • Earn some income and complete some hours of approved activities each month
    • For example, if you earn $380 per month, that equals 52 hours when using the federal minimum wage of $7.25 ($380/$7.25 = 52). To meet the 80 hours of approved activities, you would need to do 28 more hours of any of the activities in B above.

Some people may be exempt from Medicaid work requirements.  This includes children, adults 65 and older, pregnant or recently pregnant individuals, people with disabilities or certain health conditions, caregivers, and some veterans. Exemptions may also apply to people enrolled in Medicare, participating in qualifying treatment programs, or with certain foster care or incarceration histories.

You may need to meet specific conditions or provide documentation to qualify for an exemption when renewing your Medicaid coverage.

Increase in Medicaid Renewal

Adults will need to renew their Medicaid every six months instead of once a year.  This means you may need to review your eligibility and submit information more often to keep your coverage.

If you apply for Medicaid before January 1, 2027 or renew before March 1, 2027, you will get 12 months of coverage.  After that, you will be required to renew every six months.
