Important Information about New York State’s Essential Plan

It’s important to stay informed about how upcoming changes may affect your coverage. Federal funding cuts have impacted New York’s Essential Plan health insurance. Please read through this information carefully to understand these changes that will begin on July 1, 2026.

What is changing?

A new federal law has changed the rules for who can join state health insurance programs. In New York, people who earn between 200% and 250% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $31,920 to $39,900) will no longer be eligible for the Essential Plan starting on July 1, 2026. Enrollees whose eligibilty is ending received a notice in April. They should also expect another letter in May with information about new coverage options.

Are there other options for coverage?

Most people affected by these changes can sign up for a Qualified Health Plan and may receive financial assistance to lower costs. Monthly payments and costs are different from the Essential Plan. On average, a “Silver Plan” costs about $220 per month after tax credit.

When do I need to select a new plan by?

The enrollment period begins on May 16, 2026. You have until August 30, 2026 to select a new plan so your health insurance coverage does not end.

Why do I need insurance coverage?
