Supports for Employment
Supports for Employment serves individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, visual impairments and traumatic brain injury, functioning as an employment agency that provides job opportunities and development in several counties including Onondaga, Madison and Oswego.
Liberty Resources has contracts with four separate state agencies who fund different aspects of the program: the NYS Education Department’s Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation agency (ACCES-VR); the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVH); the NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD); and the NYS Office of Mental Health (OMH).
The program is currently supporting approximately 200 individuals. Candidates for service must meet at minimum OPWDD, OMH, ACCES-VR and CBVH criteria for having a significant disability and must have a vocational goal focusing on competitive community employment.
The Supports for Employment program accepts referrals of eligible individuals from ACCES-VR and the CBVH. The Supports for Employment staff bring diverse backgrounds and credentials to the program effort. Each individual receiving services is assigned his or her own team consisting of an Employment Case Manager, a Job Coach and a Job Developer. The team works together with the consumer, providing the appropriate level of necessary supports at each stage of pre-employment or employment for the person. These supports remain in place as needed for the duration of the individual’s employment with that employer. The Supports for Employment Program currently works with more than 50 employers throughout Central New York.
Once enrolled, individuals receiving services can expect to move through several phases including screening and assessment, job development, intensive training, and finally extended services once established in a job.
In the screening and assessment phase, we get to know the person’s:
- Job interests and preferences
- Skills and experience
- Educational background as it pertains to the employment they desire
- Previous work history
In the job development phase, staff determine an eligible job match between the employee and the employment situation by:
- Getting to know as much about the job and the employer as we do about the employee
- Defining the job tasks
- Assessing the job site
During the intensive training period, the program provides the necessary supports for the employee to learn to perform the tasks accurately and safely, to the satisfaction of the employer. A Job Coach:
- Works on site
- Helps in the training of the employee
- Assist in developing relationship between the employer and employee
Once the job is being successfully performed by the employee, extended services provide continued support that helps the employee and employer maintain a successful working relationship, and provides an opportunity to create additional jobs at the site.
A successful outcome occurs each time a person secures employment, trains for that employment with or without supports, and is able to maintain that position for at least 90 days after intense supports have been reduced.
